logically makes sense.

If there were no Self behind lives of beings, which by the way go through many prolonged and strange transformations including all kinds of incarnations in different types of bodies, we would not be able to explain the whole

compassion business. Nirvana itself without Consciousness does not make sense. If Buddha is not aware about his Nirvana how does he know about it? Hence, Wisdom /Prajna Paramita/ does not make sense also without positive existence of Absolute Consciousness. As Buddha postulates Nirvana, Universal Mind, we have to postulate Universal Consciousness of that Mind, which is the Atman of Vedanta.

In the Lankavatara Sutra Buddha says: "Then there are materialistic philosophers. No respect

nor service is to be shown them because their teachings though they may be explained by using hundreds of thousands of words and phrases, do not go beyond the concepts of this world and this body [Another proof that Buddha implied more permanent ideas of the existence for the soul] and in the end they lead to suffering. As the materialists recognize no truth as existing by itself..."(312-313). Absolute Truth then has to be recognized as existing by itself. And as relative truth makes sense in relation to relative self so Absolute Truth makes sense just in relation to Absolute Self, Absolute Consciousness, Atman. There is another sense in which Tathagatas may say to be permanent. Transcendental Intelligence rising with the attainment of enlightenment is of a permanent nature.

This Truth-essence which is discoverable in the enlightenment of all who are enlightened, is realizable as the regulative and sustaining principle of Reality, which forever abides... is a realization of their own self-nature, - in this sense Tathagatas are permanent... in the "suchness" of the Noble-Wisdom, realized within themselves"(346-347). This permanent "suchness" with the quality of Wisdom within oneself could be called Atman, or Absolute Consciousness, or Absolute Self.
