comfortable with any concept, because conceptualizing does not change x into X. To practice Buddhism is not to philosophize but to make a different effort, which can not be explained just verbally. But to evaluate Buddhism and to compare it to other religions and philosophies we have to do such conceptualizations.

By doing this however we all, whether our name is Rahula, Suzuki, Alex, Bob or x, in the Buddhist perspective will be heretics, because instead of running out of the house on fire we are talking about irrelevant matters, like the nature of burning materials, and whether our real nature will burn or remain untouched, and whether we have that nature or do not have.

Still there are certain intellectual problems, preferences and dislikes, which paralyze us before we can even move. For many of us statements of certain philosophers do not make sense as well as

their interpretations of teachings of various Buddhas. It is not possible to visit Gautama Buddha right now but Rahula's and Suzuki's books are available as well as certain Theravada and Mahayana texts. So for the purpose of making sense out of Buddhism, especially if we want to practice it in any form, let us try to understand what Rahula, Suzuki, and Buddha meant when talking about Self and Atman.

Buddha says: "The arising of consciousness is dependent upon conditions, and without these

conditions no consciousness arises, ... there is eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, olfactory-consciousness and mind-consciousness" (The Word of Buddha, Buddhist Bible, p.26). Consciousness here is an idea, mental formation connected with senses or other mental formations. Could here arise the idea of self? Buddha does not like it to happen, because "all formations are subject to suffering". That is why he says: "All things are without an Ego-entity"(anatta) and "consciousness is transient" and "Whoso delights in bodily form, or feeling, or perception, or mental formations, or consciousness he delights in suffering; and whoso delights in suffering will not be freed from suffering"(p.27). Buddha does not want his listeners to be
