Atlantis Essay, Research Paper Atlantis was known as the lost continent. It was said to be the size of Europe. Many people said that Atlantis existed during the time of the Stone Age, which was about nine thousand years ago. Plato, a popular Greek philosopher wrote a lot about Atlantis, it s inhabitants, it s geography, and it s theories on its destruction. Many people do think Plato actually believed in Atlantis s existence because of his many detailed descriptions of Atlantis. Plato had wrote his earliest descriptions of Atlantis about two thousand three hundred years ago. In the beginning of time the Greek gods divided the world up among themselves. Poseidon, god of the sea has received Atlantis. Atlantis was a very peaceful, beautiful and prospered island for many years. The holy capital of Atlantis was called The City of Atlantis. At the center of Atlantis capital was the Holy Mountain, Mount Atlas. Mount Atlas was represented as a pyramid or an obelisk. Plato had thought that Atlantis was a huge island placed in the unexplored, mysterious Ocean of the Atlanteans, by Pillar of Hercules, or the Strait of Gibraltar. The Atlantic Ocean supposedly got its name from the Ocean of Atlanteans. The Greek philosopher spoke in his works Timaeus and Critias of a continent in the Atlantic ocean larger than Africa and Asia Minor combined which rivaled Athens as the most advanced in the world. Violent earthquakes and floods occurred and in one single day and night all the people of Atlantis sunk with the island. A comet or meteor could have caused its destruction. The comet or meteor could have collided with the island itself and cause to sink 11,500 years ago. According to the legend the island of Atlantis was violently thrown into the sea by the forces of nature, and its few survivors managed to swim ashore and relate their story. Popular media has effectively minimized the legend and the fantastic rumor, though to make up for this it has generated falsities not as lavish but just as interesting. Satellites have mapped and studied the earth, leaving only a space frontier that is as yet unreachable. But standing out is a charming fantasy the modern world has yet to verify the lost continent of Atlantis.
