AL Gore The Best Plan For The — страница 3
security – through meaningful pension reform – to America’s seniors. Gore also has been a strong advocate for support services and service opportunities made available in the Older Americans Act. Since his days as a Congressman from rural Tennessee more than 20 years ago, Vice President Al Gore has understood the needs of America’s rural citizens. He has been a leader in this Administration’s efforts to strengthen family farms, promote rural economies, open foreign markets to American produce, enhance farm income and has fought for emergency farm relief when natural disasters strike. For more than twenty years, while serving as a Congressman, a Senator and now as Vice President, Al Gore has fought tirelessly to improve the standard of living of America’s working families. With an 88% lifetime rating from the AFL-CIO, Al Gore supported increases in the minimum wage, opposed dangerous cuts to worker safety, fought to guarantee workers’ rights to organize and participate in our political system and has supported laws to help working families. As Vice President, and as a Member of Congress, Al Gore has fought hard to expand opportunities for women. He has worked to erase the earnings gap between men and women, fought for quality child care services, helped increase funding for women’s health care programs, and has been praised for his efforts to protect a woman’s right to choose. Al Gore has been a leader in the Administration’s efforts to help move welfare recipients to work. Since 1993, welfare rolls have dropped by 53 percent, or by 7.5 million recipients. In March 1997, Gore challenged federal agencies to hire 10,000 welfare recipients by the year 2000. By April 2000, the federal government nearly tripled that goal, hiring nearly 30,000 welfare recipients. In addition, Gore created the Welfare-to-Work Coalition to Sustain Success-comprised of national civic organizations that work with federal, state and local governments, private corporations and small businesses to help welfare recipients obtain and retain jobs in the private sector.
