He has worked to erase the earnings gap between men and women, fought for quality child care services, helped increase funding for women’s health care programs, and has been praised for his efforts to protect a woman’s right to choose. Al Gore has been a leader in the Administration’s efforts to help move welfare recipients to work. Since 1993, welfare rolls have dropped by 53 percent, or

by 7.5 million recipients. In March 1997, Gore challenged federal agencies to hire 10,000 welfare recipients by the year 2000. By April 2000, the federal government nearly tripled that goal, hiring nearly 30,000 welfare recipients. In addition, Gore created the Welfare-to-Work Coalition to Sustain Success-comprised of national civic organizations that work with federal, state and local governments, private corporations and small businesses to help welfare recipients obtain and retain jobs in the private sector.
